Boat Maintenance Tips That We Need to Remember

If you own an automobile, taking care of a boat is not much different. It does not matter what type of boat you have; maintenance steps and procedures are pretty much the same. A lot of the maintenance can be done by the owner, while other more difficult tasks must be done by a professional. This is a list of regular maintenance boat tips that every owner should know.

Basic Maintenance Tasks

There are many basic maintenance tasks you can carry out as a boat owner that do not require any assistance from a professional boat engineer or mechanic.

Inspections – Before you carry out any maintenance tasks, you must check the boat to see if all the rod rigging and other components are in excellent condition. If they show any signs of damage, they may need to be repaired or replaced, depending on the condition of the parts. If you need to replace components of the boat and you feel comfortable doing it, you can order parts online and make adjustments.

Cleaning – Another basic task you must carry out when you own a boat is cleaning. The entire boat must be kept clean to ensure it stays in tip top condition. For example, the fiberglass coat that covers the hull must be washed and waxed to ensure it does not oxidize and turn chalky. If you do not clean the body, dirt will encourage mildew to grow and affect the performance of the boat.

Flushing the Engine – Other than cleaning the boat and lubricating components, you must also look out for engine when you have finished on the water. If you have been boating in salt water, follow your engine manufacturer’s instructions to get rid of salt water and flush the engine.

Professional Maintenance – A lot of boat owners bring their boats in for annual maintenance chores such as changing engine oil, replacing rigging, lubricating fittings, and painting the hull. If you do not feel comfortable doing any of these tasks, it is better to have your boat checked once a year by a professional team.

Although boat maintenance is commonly left to the pros, there are many tasks you can complete yourself that do not require a professional hand. Some people enjoy boat maintenance and repair while others prefer to leave that side of boating to the professionals. It is important to take care of your boat to ensure longevity and performance.
